London: To study in UK, The UK government has put forth its new points-based student visa route for international students in the parliament. This new system, according to the government, simplifies the previous visa application requirements for international students applying for the study in UK.
All overseas students will be required to score a total of 70 points to apply to any university in the UK, and also to obtain a UK study visa. These points will be given to the applicants if they can determine that they have an admission offer from any UK university, speak English, and can support themselves while studying in the UK.
The UK Home Office has clarified that the route has equal opportunities for all international students including those from Europe after the Brexit transition period ends at the end of this year.
UK Minister for Future Borders and Immigration Kevin Foster said, “Now we have left the EU, we are free to unleash this country’s full potential and implement the changes we need to restore trust in the immigration system and attract talent to drive our economy forward.”
“Launching the Student Route early sends a clear message to the world we want the best and brightest to come to the UK to study at our globally renowned education institutions,” he said.
Some overseas students will not be coming to the UK for their courses until the beginning of the spring semester next year because of coronavirus. Consequently, the government has chosen to introduce the new route now to give students ample time to get benefited from the novel updated process.
The new Student Route is a modification of the previous Tier 4 route and is more streamlined for sponsors and their students and creating smoother pathways for them. It also ensures that the UK remains competitive as always in a shifting global education market.
The new route also ensures that there will be no limit to the number of overseas students coming to the UK. The UK government is aiming to increase the number of international students enrolled in the UK higher education system each year to 600,000 by 2030.
“The UK is a global leader in higher education, research, and innovation. As we look to the UK’s future place in the world, we want to protect our hard-won status and the opportunities it provides to help with the economic recovery of towns and cities across Britain – as well as finding solutions to the wider challenges that face our society,” said Dr. Tim Bradshaw, Chief Executive of the Russell Group of leading universities.
“We welcome these changes to the immigration rules, which will help to ensure the UK remains an internationally attractive place for the best and brightest students to study. We will continue to work with the government to ensure our visa system remains flexible and responsive to developing issues, such as those emerging from the coronavirus pandemic,” he said.
The new points-based system has come into resolution because of Brexit. The UK will exit the European Union at the end of December.
