Australia’s study visa applications: Immense drop observed

The Australian study visa applications have been plunged by a third. The international applications by the overseas students have been dropped by a third between the 2019-2020 financial year. The Department of Home Affairs Australia has presented data that states that an 88% drop in applications has been observed in May month only. Due to this, the academic year in Australia seems to have fewer enrollments.

The stats from the various countries are as follows:

  • The applications from Nepal have been dropped by 60.7%.
  • The applications from India have been dropped by 46.7%.
  • The applications from China have been dropped by 19.9%.
  • The applications from Brazil and Sri Lanka have also been dropped to a third.
  • The applications from the US and Vietnam have been dropped by a quarter.

Whereas, these countries have the highest international students who come to study in Australia every year.

The Australian higher education authorities say that the travel restrictions have impacted on the Australian study. As Australia is also known as the hub of international students so, many Australian universities depend on the tuition fees paid by international students. The revenue generated on average ranges from 26.2% to 40%. The fewer international students in Australian universities have led towards the closing of various facilities and some services are also being shut.

It can be determined that the immense drops in applications are due to Covid-19 situations and also due to the travel sanctions around the world. In the online visa filing countrywide, the 10% increase in the applications is observed, whereas Nepal has seen a 36% increase and India has seen a 39% increase in application respectively. China has witnessed a 7% in the applications.

Australia has confirmed that online study will be counted towards a post-study work permit. However, it is expected that the borders in Australia will be opened soon. The COVID-19 has inflicted damage on almost every country’s economy. The immigration processes overseas, study visas, and work permits were postponed for more than 6 months. Australia has also confirmed that the new students will be allowed to study online from overseas.
